New Mineral Amaterasuite Discovered in Okayama Jade by University of Tokyo and Others (Kyodo News)

A research team from the University of Tokyo and Yamaguchi University announced on the 7th that they had discovered a new black-green mineral in jadeite collected in Okayama Prefecture, and named it "Amaterasu stone" after the goddess Amaterasu in Japanese mythology. The chemical composition and crystal structure of the mineral are clearly different from known minerals, and it was listed as a new mineral by the International Mineralogical Union.
