New Mexico’s governor claps back at Trump’s plan to rename her state
Trump said New Mexico should become New America, while Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said the state’s name is not up for debate.
On Monday, President Donald Trump proposed renaming New Mexico to "New America" on Truth Social, claiming it would boost home values and fix "crooked elections." Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham immediately rejected the proposal.
Trump previously signed executive orders directing federal agencies to rename the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America" and Lake Ontario to "Lake America." He has shared maps depicting the Land of Enchantment as "New America" since September.
Dating back to the 16th century, New Mexico's name predates the United States. While the president can direct federal geographic references, the White House lacks legal authority to rename a state, as such changes require state-level action.
Lujan Grisham criticized the proposal as a distraction from policy failures, highlighting New Mexico's universal, no-cost childcare and replaced health care subsidies. She wrote, "We'll be New Mexico forevermore," emphasizing the state's secure elections.
Worried that companies might follow executive orders as they did previously, New Mexico's congressional delegation recently sent letters to Apple and Google executives requesting public commitments to keep the state's name on Apple Maps and Google Maps.
