New interstellar comet will keep a safe distance from Earth, NASA says

UNITED STATES, JUL 13 – 3I/ATLAS is the largest and possibly oldest interstellar comet ever observed, moving at 66 km/s and offering rare insights into material from beyond our Solar System.

  • A new interstellar comet named 3I/ATLAS was first spotted on July 1, 2025, by a NASA ATLAS telescope in Chile.
  • NASA and ESA confirmed the comet originated outside our solar system after gathering data from multiple telescopes.
  • The comet is about 20 kilometers wide, travels around 60 km per second, and will pass closest to the sun around October 30 near Mars's orbit.
  • Experts have confirmed that the comet does not present any danger to Earth, maintaining a distance of at least 150 million miles, which is over one and a half times the distance between our planet and the sun.
  • This is the third known interstellar object after 1I/'Oumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019, highlighting limited but growing observations of such visitors.
