Hiker Found Dead After Dayslong Search in Notorious Mountain Range
EL PASO COUNTY, COLORADO, JUN 19 – Over 100 volunteers and multiple agencies conducted a four-day search and recovery operation for Russell Hardy, 55, who died near the 14,110-foot Pikes Peak summit.
- Russell Hardy, 55, was reported missing on June 13 after failing to return from a hike on Pikes Peak near Colorado Springs.
- Hardy arrived in Colorado on June 10 and began hiking Pikes Peak the following day, with a planned return on June 12 that did not occur.
- The El Paso and Teller County Sheriff's Offices launched a joint search involving over 100 volunteers, K-9 teams, drones, and support from the Army Reserve to locate Hardy.
- On June 16, a hiker located Hardy’s remains close to the top of Pikes Peak, and his body was safely recovered with the help of a helicopter mission supported by Army Reserve aviation units.
- Authorities found no signs of foul play, describing the incident as a tragic outcome of confronting nature’s challenges, and Hardy's identity is pending official coroner confirmation.
