New ‘Fast & Furious’ coaster brings film franchise to life at Universal Studios Hollywood
The coaster has drawn neighborhood complaints as residents seek changes to reduce screams and other noise from riders.
- On Wednesday, Universal Studios Hollywood officially opened Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, a 4,100-foot outdoor coaster reaching speeds of 72 mph, marking the park's first major outdoor thrill ride.
- Despite mitigation efforts including a 940-foot sound wall and pea gravel track, the coaster has drawn noise complaints from neighboring Toluca Lake residents since testing began three months ago.
- Residents like Colby Jensen, a Toluca Lake homeowner of 26 years, cite "emotional duress" and potential lower property values, noting noise persists from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
- Following months of complaints, Universal Studios Hollywood scheduled a community meeting for September 30 on the Universal City Lot and pledged to build additional sound barriers.
- County Supervisor Kathryn Barger is monitoring the situation as the park sits on county land, while residents stress they seek noise containment rather than ride closure.
