Prosecutors Launcher Terror Investigation as Poland Reels From Fatal Shootings
Prosecutors are treating the attack as terrorism after six people were killed and 16 injured in what officials call Poland's first mass public shooting.
- On Saturday, a 24-year-old gunman killed six people and injured at least 16 during a drive-by shooting in Krakow's main market square, prompting Polish prosecutors to investigate the incident as a 'terrorist offence'.
- Investigators discovered three additional bodies at the suspect's home in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, linking him to both locations, while Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński announced that preliminary findings indicate the suspect held 'very radical far-right views'.
- Police officers Jakub Kulik and Artur Morański were critically injured subduing the attacker, while two surgeons dining nearby rushed to the scene and provided life-saving medical intervention for the wounded officers.
- Krakow Mayor Łukasz Gibała declared an official period of mourning until Wednesday following the tragedy, while a public fundraiser launched by Krzysztof Stanowski raised over 3.5 million zloty to support the injured officers.
- Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that injured officer Kulik is a former soldier from the elite 6th Airborne Brigade, while authorities noted the suspect holds a valid firearms licence but lacked tactical combat training.
