Ivey Calls Special Primary for Alabama Senate Districts After Redistricting Ruling
The new vote follows a federal appeals court ruling on Alabama’s 2021 Senate map, and the May 19 results in both districts are void.
On Friday, Governor Kay Ivey called a special primary election for Alabama Senate Districts 25 and 26 after a federal appeals court allowed the state to use its 2021 Alabama-drawn State Senate map.
The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Alabama can use the 2021 maps, a decision Ivey praised as "yet another victory for Alabamians and our elections."
Because of the special election order, May 19 primary results for Senate Districts 25 and 26 are now void, and state officials confirmed there will be no runoff election.
Candidates must qualify with major political parties by 8 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, while the special primary is set for August 11 and the general election for November 3.
Alabama's broader redistricting battle continues, with Ivey remaining hopeful the Supreme Court will rule in the state's favor on a separate congressional redistricting case.
