The Washington State government recently proposed a $5 billion proposal to restore salmon habitat in response to a fishing rights lawsuit with tribes. The funds will be used to replace culverts that block salmon migration and fulfill a 2013 federal court injunction. The lawsuit originated in 2001, when 21 tribes sued the state government to replace culverts that blocked salmon migration. The court required the habitat to be restored by 2030, but…

Major milestone for two-year project on US 101 between Sequim and Gardiner

GARDINER – The end of road work for fish passage is in sight for travelers on US 101 between Sequim and Gardiner. Wednesday, March 26, construction crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation opened a new bridge on US 101 east of Gardiner. The bridge is part of the Jefferson and Clallam counties fish barrier removal project. With the opening of the new bridge, the project is now more than half-way complete.

OLYMPIA, WA – Washington state senators revealed a proposal Monday to raise billions of dollars to pay for the court-ordered removal of culverts blocking the migration of salmon and other fish. The plan included in the Senate’s capital budget would bond up to $5 billion over the next 15 years and repay the debt with revenue from an existing tax on electrical utilities.
