Netherlands Says It Could Hack F-35 Jets if US Cuts off Software Access
Dutch Defence Secretary highlights European capability to modify F-35 software independently, emphasizing the need for military autonomy amid US control concerns.
- This week, Dutch defence secretary Gijs Tuinman said European forces could modify F-35 software if the US withdrew, calling 'The F-35 is truly a shared product' on BNR's Boekestijn en De Wijk show.
- Amid earlier warnings about US control, Joachim Schranzhofer, head of communications at Hensoldt, warned a remote kill switch was more than rumor, fueling Europe’s fears and Portugal dropping F-35 plans.
- The F-35's software is managed through ALIS, with service packs issued every year or two, but Israel negotiated a deal allowing it to run its own software on its F-35I fleet, Tuinman said.
- Against fears of unreliable US support, Tuinman said Europe is rapidly scaling conventional deterrence to have extra F-35s, Tomahawks, tanks, and ships operational by the end of 2028.
- With concerns spreading across Europe, The Register reported that Lockheed Martin referred inquiries to the US government, which did not immediately reply to requests for comment.
