Nestle Looks to Develop New Products to Serve Users of Weight-Loss Drugs

The company is using artificial intelligence and nutritional science to target side effects like muscle loss as GLP-1 drug use expands.

  • On Monday, Nestle announced it is using artificial intelligence to develop products for around 16 million Americans taking GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, converting the medication trend into a business opportunity.
  • Rapid weight loss from drugs like Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and Ozempic often causes muscle loss and facial fat reduction known as "Ozempic face," which Nestle believes its specialized products can help address.
  • Chief Technology Officer Stefan Palzer said the firm uses AI to process research and navigate a database of roughly 120,000 recipes, with products like Boost Advanced Nutrition Shake containing 35 grams of protein.
  • Amanda Avery, associate professor in nutrition and dietetics at the University of Nottingham, cautioned that consumers are susceptible to marketing and whole foods offer similar nutrients at lower costs than specialized products.
  • Nestle uses AI-driven simulations to predict consumer responses to new products before market launch, with Palzer stating, "Increasingly AI will get into this field" as the company identifies emerging trends.
