Nesbitt asks DOJ to investigate Whitmer's ties to grant scandal
Nesbitt says a federal investigation is needed after charges alleged the grant recipient used taxpayer money for personal expenses and forged records.
On Monday, Michigan Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt requested that Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche investigate Gov. Gretchen Whitmer regarding a $20 million state grant awarded to Fay Beydoun's nonprofit, Global Link International.
Earlier this month, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel filed criminal charges against Beydoun, a former Michigan Economic Development Corporation executive committee member and Whitmer appointee, for allegedly misappropriating funds intended for an Oakland County business accelerator.
Investigators allege Beydoun forged invoices and submitted misleading expense reports to the MEDC, including claiming more than $6,000 for handmade Tunisian rugs as an investor event expense and hosting dinners for then-Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.
Nesbitt argued a federal probe is necessary due to what he described as a "conflict of interest" involving Nessel and Whitmer. State Rep. Jay DeBoyer and the Michigan Republican Party are calling on politicians to return campaign contributions linked to Beydoun.
Approved via Public Act 166 of 2022, the grant was intended to attract international businesses, yet Beydoun incorporated Global Link International days before securing the funding. Whitmer's office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
