Nepal Floods Leave Women and Girls Vulnerable
- On Tuesday, heavy rains in Nepal triggered fresh floods and landslides, hampering recovery efforts from August's disaster. The Gandak River reached a record 91.25 metres at Bagaha, damaging embankments in Bihar's West Champaran district.
- The August 26, 2026 flash floods, triggered by a glacier collapse along the Nepal-China border, killed at least 1,453 people and left more than 5,000 missing. Reconstruction costs are estimated at $4.8 billion.
- Save the Children Nepal warned that over 1,000 children are in temporary shelters without parents, facing acute safety risks. Ayush Joshi, director for advocacy, campaigns, communications and media, noted "many temporary shelters are built without planning," increasing vulnerability to trafficking.
- Water Resources Department teams deployed four groups to repair embankment breaches in West Champaran, where water levels rose around 35 cm above the previous peak. Officials are actively monitoring to prevent further inundation.
- Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah proposed a Himalayan Climate Resilience Mechanism led by Nepal, India and China to improve cross-border disaster forecasting. Shah said the Himalayas should become a "laboratory of international cooperation" for long-term resilience.
