Neck and neck by-election could swing on postal votes
Luke Richmond is on track to enter parliament as postal votes and preferences continue to be counted, with Labor leading by fewer than 800 votes.
On Saturday, Labor candidate Luke Richmond claimed victory in the Stafford by-election, securing 51.2% of the two-party vote to retain the historically safe Brisbane seat.
The by-election was triggered by the sudden death of former independent MP Jimmy Sullivan in April, who had been expelled from the Labor Party in May 2025 over legal and medical concerns.
Despite the victory, Labor suffered a 4.1% swing toward the Liberal National Party , with candidate Fiona Hammond, a former Brisbane City Councillor, trailing Richmond by 768 votes after preferences.
Opposition Leader Steven Miles faces internal pressure following the reduced margin, though he maintains caucus support and dismissed suggestions the swing reflects poorly on his leadership.
The outcome sets the stage for the 2028 state election, with Miles affirming his absolute intention to lead the party to the next general poll despite mounting external pressure.
