Nebraska Quarantine Unit Available to Help with Ebola Response After Hantavirus Stay Ends
Officials said 18 cruise passengers exposed to hantavirus are now under twice-daily checks at UNMC’s quarantine unit.
On Friday, two additional cruise ship passengers exposed to hantavirus arrived at the National Quarantine Unit in Omaha, bringing the total number of individuals under monitoring to 18.
These passengers from the M/V Hondius have been quarantined since arriving May 11, with the CDC recommending they remain at the facility through at least May 31 to monitor for symptoms.
The two individuals transferred from Emory University Hospital in Atlanta after being medically cleared, as officials noted the National Quarantine Unit is better suited for long-term monitoring.
State and federal officials are awaiting CDC guidance on when passengers can return home, with patients receiving twice-daily temperature and symptom checks during quarantine.
Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen confirmed the National Quarantine Unit will be available for Ebola response after the hantavirus quarantine concludes, with experts already assisting global efforts.
