Nearly three times more measles cases in Canada than U.S. right now, according to public health data
CANADA, JUL 16 – Canada reports 3,822 measles cases in 10 provinces with Ontario having over 2,200 cases and one death, exceeding U.S. case counts nearly threefold, officials said.
- Comparative data released July 5 shows Canada had 3,517 confirmed and 305 probable measles cases, nearly three times the 1,309 reported by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
- This year Canada has recorded 3,822 measles cases across 10 provinces and territories, led by Ontario’s 2,245 cases and Alberta’s 1,231, with Alberta’s outbreak starting in March.
- The federal government wrote that the data likely underestimates total cases, while one death was reported in Ontario and three in the U.S.
- In a video interview on Wednesday, Isaac Bogoch said `It’s unacceptable to have measles outbreaks in Canada, especially this size,` while noting cases have declined in Southern Ontario since late April and Alberta has shown slower improvement.
- Isaac Bogoch said `it’s extremely important that both countries take steps to curb these outbreaks and to prevent future infections`, while experts have encouraged cautious optimism on Ontario’s slowing case counts and noted data collection differences could complicate response.
