Guttmacher Institute data show 35,000 people went to Illinois for abortion care in 2024, helped by expanded clinic capacity and state funding.
Illinois is the destination for nearly 1 in 4 people traveling to another state for abortion care, according to a report from the Guttmacher Institute, with nationwide abortions reaching an estimated 1.1 million in 2025.
Since the 2022 Supreme Court Dobbs decision, 13 states have implemented near-total abortion bans, and 7 others restrict the procedure after 6 to 12 weeks; abortion is banned or largely inaccessible in 5 of Illinois' 6 border states.
Family Planning Associates in Chicago expanded its staff from about 40 to more than 70 during the first year after Dobbs, while Illinois allocated $10 million in 2023 to establish the Complex Abortion Regional Line for Access .
