NDLEA Intercepts ₦5bn Drug Consignments At Ports, Arrests Milan-Bound Cocaine Suspect

The suspect allegedly paid N16 million for the cocaine and said part of the shipment was meant for a partner in Italy.

  • On September 27, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency operatives arrested businessman Philip Tunde at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, while attempting to smuggle 4.80kg of cocaine to Milan, Italy, concealed in shoes and luggage.
  • This arrest follows major seizures at Lagos, Apapa, and Onne ports, where NDLEA operatives intercepted drug consignments valued at more than N5 billion across multiple intelligence-driven operations.
  • During interrogation, Tunde claimed he paid N16 million for the cocaine, funding the purchase with compensation from a workplace injury in Italy where he lost fingertips.
  • NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa commended officers involved, urging personnel to sustain intelligence-driven operations against trafficking networks while maintaining balanced drug control efforts.
  • Beyond enforcement, the agency continues its War Against Drug Abuse sensitisation programmes nationwide, engaging schools and communities including St. Paul's Secondary School, Oji, on illicit drug dangers.
