Navy Commander Angus Topshee promoted to vice chief of defence staff
The leadership shuffle fills a key military post as Rear-Admiral Dan Charlebois is also promoted to lead the Royal Canadian Navy.
On Tuesday, The Department of National Defence confirmed that Royal Canadian Navy Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee is being promoted to vice chief of the defence staff, replacing the retiring Lt.-Gen. Stephen Kelsey.
Rear-Admiral Dan Charlebois will assume command of the Royal Canadian Navy, receiving promotion to vice-admiral in a leadership transition affecting the service.
Topshee has gained a reputation as a strikingly frank communicator within military ranks, particularly regarding how the recruitment and retention crisis is affecting the Navy.
The appointment had been rumored for months within the defence community before The National Post first reported the news Tuesday evening after internal communiques circulated to staff.
Topshee previously spoke at the Ottawa Conference on Security and Defence in March, signaling his focus on systemic military challenges as he assumes the vice chief role.
