NATO's Rutte says Europeans have 'gotten message' from Trump

On Monday, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said European nations have "gotten the message" regarding United States President Donald Trump's planned withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany, now ensuring bilateral basing agreements are implemented.
President Trump announced the drawdown on Friday after expressing growing frustration with NATO allies, accusing them of failing to sufficiently support United States operations in the ongoing war against Iran.
While NATO member Spain refused to allow use of its bases, calling the war "unjustified," Rutte noted other nations like Montenegro, Croatia, Romania, Portugal, Greece, Italy, Britain, France, and Germany are fulfilling logistical requests.
Rutte added that "more and more" European nations are now pre-positioning assets, including minehunters and minesweepers, near the Gulf to prepare for the "next phase" of the military conflict.
The European Union's top diplomat Kaja Kallas called the troop withdrawal timing a "surprise," adding that the drawdown highlights the urgent need to strengthen the European pillar within the NATO alliance.
