Nato Increases Missile Defence Posture After Turkey Incident
NATO intercepted an Iranian ballistic missile aimed at Turkey and raised defense readiness, with the posture to remain until Iran's regional missile threat diminishes, officials said.
- On March 4, NATO increased its alliance-wide ballistic missile defence posture after intercepting an Iranian missile aimed at Turkey, with debris photographed in Dortyol, southern Hatay province.
- On Wednesday, NATO defenses shot down a threat from Iran directed at Turkey, which hosts Incirlik Air Base, prompting heightened measures until the threat subsides, said Colonel Martin O'Donnell.
- In less than 10 minutes, NATO service members identified the ballistic missile, confirmed its trajectory, alerted land- and sea-based missile-defence systems, and launched an interceptor, while Gen. Jason Hinds ordered heightened readiness Thursday.
- Amid withheld operational details, allied governments gave unanimous support to the stepped-up posture, while Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary-General, said Article 5 mutual defence clause will not be invoked.
- NATO's layered missile-defence architecture, built over more than 15 years, includes the U.S. Aegis Ashore site in Deveselu, Romania, U.S. Navy destroyers out of Rota, Spain, a missile defence suite in Poland, and the Kurecik early-warning radar, Turkey.
