European NATO countries increased their defense spending by just under a fifth last year.

Spain is one of the six European NATO countries that has seen their troops down in the last decade, while the general trend in Europe has been to maintain or increase them. Most notably the cases of Poland and Lithuania, which have doubled their military forces in view of the Russian threat.

NATO said on Thursday that 22 of its 32 members met the Alliance's defense spending target of 2% of gross domestic product (GDP) last year.
