Volunteers Transform Highway 33 One Native Plant at a Time
NALT will meet with about 21 property owners and begin planting native gardens this fall to boost urban biodiversity and habitat for local bees.
The Nanaimo Area Land Trust will meet with about 21 interested property owners in Nanaimo's Old City Quarter this summer to plan pollinator-friendly gardens for installation this fall.
Linda Brooymans, NALT stewardship coordinator, described the initiative as a template showing how neighborhood changes can spur big impacts in biodiversity and ecosystem health in urban environments.
Local artist and naturalist Jesse Gray transformed her Nanaimo yard over five years into a haven for over 21 genera of native bees, calling native plant gardening "easier than you think."
The project secured $2,000 from Nanaimo's community sustainability grant and nearly $5,000 from the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation to support installation efforts.
Alongside fall planting, NALT will host pollinator species identification workshops with the Nanaimo Old City Association to engage property owners in the installation process.
