Hurricane Center Gives High Chance Gulf System Could Become Tropical Depression or Storm
On Monday, the National Hurricane Center designated a low-pressure area in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico as Invest 92-L, assigning it a 70 percent chance of developing into a tropical depression within seven days.
The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season has been unusually quiet with eight tropical storms but no hurricanes by October 5. An average year records 14 named storms and seven hurricanes by this time.
Meteorologists note that gradual development is becoming more likely despite marginally conducive conditions. The system currently has 30 mph winds and a central pressure of 1010 mb, with a 30 percent formation chance over 48 hours.
Regardless of development, Florida faces potential heavy rainfall and coastal flooding. AccuWeather meteorologist Nick Arman noted impacts for the Gulf Coast could occur between Friday, October 9, and Sunday, October 11.
Forecast confidence remains low due to an upper-level low over Texas influencing potential tracks. Experts assign a 15 percent chance of hurricane strength, with tropical depression or tropical storm remaining most likely later this week.
