A National Guard member deployed to Washington, DC, is arrested on firearms charge
Police said the 22-year-old was arrested after a traffic stop found a 9mm pistol, and court records show he lacked a District of Columbia permit.
On Monday, U.S. Park Police arrested Oklahoma National Guardsman Jakob Noonan, 22, after a traffic stop in Washington, charging him with carrying an unlicensed 9mm Canik pistol in his personal vehicle.
President Donald Trump ordered the National Guard deployment to Washington in August 2025, citing crime prevention, though local officials argue the presence normalizes a military force and wastes taxpayer money.
Noonan's arrest marks the second time in two months that a task force member has been detained, following an August incident where Georgia National Guard member Zion Mitchell allegedly brandished a firearm.
Charged with a felony carrying up to five years in prison, the soldier appeared in D.C. Superior Court on Tuesday and was released from jail custody by Friday, according to inmate records.
Approximately 3,000 troops remain in Washington as part of the mission, which is scheduled to continue until January 2029 despite ongoing contention regarding the military presence in the capital.
