On Wednesday, NASCAR driver Kyle Busch experienced shortness of breath, overheating, and coughing up blood while testing at the General Motors Charlotte Technical Center, according to a 911 call obtained Friday. Busch died Thursday at age 41.
Prior to the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, family members said Busch had been hospitalized with a "severe illness," while reports indicate he was fighting a sinus condition.
Emergency responders were told during the 911 call that Busch was lying on the bathroom floor, with the caller noting he "was very hot" and "producing a little bit of blood, coughing up some blood."
Reflecting on his career, NASCAR released a statement mourning the loss of the two-time Cup Series champion, praising him as "one the most accomplished and recognizable drivers in NASCAR history" with 63 wins.
Emergency responders transported Busch to a Charlotte hospital after he became unresponsive on Wednesday, though no cause of death has been released. He was scheduled to compete in both the Cup Series and Truck Series races.
