Shin Ji-yai, South Korean golfer, trailed by one stroke while Chisato and Akie Iwai, twin sisters, and Minami Katsu were two shots behind at Seta Golf Club.
The depth of the field includes eight other players three shots off the lead, including Minjee Lee of Australia, who won the KPMG Women's PGA Championship earlier this year.
Defending champion Rio Takeda opened with a 1-over 73 and sat eight strokes behind the leaders at Seta Golf Club in western Japan, highlighting early swings in positioning after round one.
