During the 2021 landing of NASA's Perseverance Mars rover, not only did the rover itself arrive on the red planet, but some detached parts of the spacecraft used for the landing also crashed into the surface of Mars.
Scientists have used equipment that is no longer working to obtain new data on the surface of the Red Planet.
Five craters formed by debris that fell onto the surface when NASA's Perseverance rover landed on Mars have been examined. 3D shock-physics models, created using the known mass of the impacting objects, revealed that the Martian surface is much weaker than expected and has a sandy texture that could be crushed between the fingers.
