The disaster in the China-Nepal border region occurred suddenly and completely unexpectedly: in just 10 minutes, huge streams of water and mud swept away everything in their path - with devastating consequences for thousands of residents of the region. Scientists are trying to learn more about these dangerous phenomena and improve early warning systems, Deutsche Welle reports.
It is still chaos in Nepal since last week’s devastating flooding caused by a glacier breaking off. But time is running out. Engineer Ashish Thapa and his colleagues are looking at how the bridges swept away in the mercilessly hard-hit village of Devighat can be replaced as quickly as possible. “We are determined to rebuild the bridges. And the road. And the village. It’s just going to take a long time.”
