Murderer and second inmate who escaped prison arrested
Two prisoners, including a convicted murderer, were arrested after escaping HMP Leyhill and evading capture for a week; one was also suspected of robbery, police said.
- On January 1, Matthew Armstrong, 35, and Daniel Washbourne, 40, absconded from HMP Leyhill, South Gloucestershire, and were arrested on Wednesday.
- Following inquiries, investigators linked an alleged forced-entry theft in a nearby village to Matthew Armstrong, who was arrested on suspicion after officers found a man forced entry, threatened occupants, and stole a phone and cash.
- Warwickshire Police arrested Armstrong near Henley-in-Arden train station shortly before 12pm, while Washbourne was detained in Bristol city centre at about 1.30am and taken to hospital with pre-existing injuries before custody.
- Avon and Somerset Police arrested a third man on January 3; Aaron Thomas, 39, was charged with escaping lawful custody and appeared at court on January 5, with a Bristol Crown Court hearing set for February.
- Multi-Force policing and public reports led to the suspects being found, with Avon and Somerset Police thanking the public for calls and sightings that helped locate absconders from the open prison HMP Leyhill.
