Murder-for-hire trial underway in the stabbing death of a New York City art dealer
A witness said Daniel Sikkema complained he wanted $8 million in the divorce and told her he hoped Brent Sikkema would die.
On Tuesday, the murder-for-hire trial of Daniel Sikkema, 55, began in Manhattan, with prosecutors alleging he arranged the stabbing death of his estranged husband, 75-year-old art dealer Brent Sikkema, in his Brazilian townhouse.
Angela Liriano, a retired pharmacist and the trial's first witness, testified she was shocked by a "very mad" Daniel when she told him his spouse was traveling to Brazil, recalling he said, "I truly hope that he's dead, that he dies."
Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas Pavlis claimed Daniel funneled over $10,000 to an alleged hitman and sought a larger payout than the $6 million he might gain from divorce rather than death.
Defense attorney Florian Miedel urged jurors to be aware of "assumptions, suggestions, inferences" prosecutors would present, stating his client was raising a 13-year-old son and would never harm the parent of that child despite their "ugly divorce."
Prosecutors plan to present digital and financial records to prove Daniel's involvement, while Miedel cautioned that "the truth is not always obvious" and people often say extreme things during contentious separation proceedings.
