MSU President Guskiewicz Leaving School to Become President at Clemson University
On Wednesday, Clemson University's Board of Trustees unanimously named Kevin Guskiewicz as its 16th president during a virtual meeting, with Guskiewicz telling trustees he was "deeply honored and incredibly grateful" to accept the role.
The search began in December after Jim Clements stepped down on Dec. 31, with interim President Bob Jones taking over Jan. 1 and Trustee Cheri Phyfer leading a nationwide recruitment that engaged 18 stakeholder groups.
Guskiewicz received the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship in 2011 for pioneering work on sport-related concussions and was inducted into the National Athletic Trainers' Association Hall of Fame in 2020. His 30-year academic career spans neuroscience and sports medicine, including service as University of North Carolina chancellor from 2019 to 2024.
Michigan State will search for a new president after Guskiewicz's departure, though MSU Board Chair Brianna Scott stated his leadership "set the university on a positive trajectory," and Guskiewicz committed to achieving record philanthropic giving at Clemson.
Just eight days before accepting Clemson's position, the Michigan State University Board of Trustees voted to nearly double Guskiewicz's salary from $1.02 million to $2 million through 2031, yet he will earn less at Clemson with a start date still being finalized.
