Ali G Movie Reviews All Agree There’s One Big Problem With New Sacha Baron Cohen Comedy
- Sacha Baron Cohen reprises his iconic Ali G character in the mockumentary 'Ali G: Who Iz I?,' receiving a limited theatrical release beginning tomorrow, October 23, for one weekend only.
- The plot follows Ali G, washed up 20 years after his peak fame and living with pregnant girlfriend Julie, who discovers a two-decade-old HBO contract offer for 'Da Ali G Show' and travels to America seeking a career relaunch.
- Cohen plays additional characters including Dr. Nira Cain-N'Degeocello, a progressive professor, and Erran Morad, an ex-Mossad agent, blending scripted scenes with pranks involving unwitting real-life participants over 89 minutes.
- Critical reception has been mixed, with reviewers describing the film as 'dawdling and cumbersome,' citing problematic segments including a $12,000 restaurant bill and an elaborate militia-training sequence featuring Texas locals.
- Twenty-Six years after Ali G's debut, Cohen's immense fame now complicates his ability to navigate public spaces undetected, a challenge the film's unusual three-day theatrical window reflects.
