Three Died in Crash as Driver, 81, Pressed Accelerator Instead of Brake
BEAUMARIS, ANGLESEY, NORTH WALES, AUG 7 – An 81-year-old driver accelerated instead of braking, causing a fatal crash that killed a retired couple in a 20mph zone, with the vehicle reaching 55mph before impact.
- An inquest heard that 81-year-old Humphrey Pickering pressed his accelerator in error, lost control on a 90-degree bend, and fatally struck a retired couple in Beaumaris.
- While pulling out of a tight parking space on Alma Street, Pickering aimed to let his wife Margaret enter when pre-crash data showed the accelerator pedal was repeatedly pressed and the brake was not activated, Meilir Hywel said.
- The Audi A8 automatic car reached 55mph in a 20mph zone before hitting a retired couple, with CCTV showing it accelerate abruptly into the scene, court heard.
- Following the crash, the Air Ambulance was called to Alma Street, and Pickering's car collided with a house, killing him at the scene as he was unbelted and sustained fatal chest injuries.
- Senior coroner Kate Robertson said pedal misapplication was the most likely explanation, and `I am incredibly sorry for your loss in these tragic circumstances`, she added.
