Motorhead guitarist Phil Campbell died from multi-organ failure, inquest hears
The coroner said his death followed recognized complications of necessary surgical procedures, after two liver transplants and bowel surgery.
Phil Campbell, the former Motorhead guitarist, died aged 64 on March 13 from multi-organ failure following complications from necessary surgeries, the Pancras Coroner's Court heard on Friday.
The Pontypridd-born musician underwent two liver transplants and bowel surgery at the Royal Free Hospital in London earlier this year, though complications developed after the second transplant.
Coroner Richard Brittain stated nothing could have prevented Campbell's death, which resulted from "recognised complications of necessary surgical procedures." The inquest confirmed he had been sober for seven years.
Motorhead paid tribute to Campbell on Instagram, describing the "wonderful" guitarist as an "enormous beam of light." He had previously toured with sons Todd, Dane, and Tyla as Phil Campbell and The Bastard Sons.
Founded in 1975 by Lemmy, whose real name was Ian Kilmister, the group helped pioneer heavy metal in Britain. Campbell served as guitarist from 1984 until the band disbanded in 2015.
