Moscow mayor says nearly 200 Ukrainian drones destroyed while heading for city
Russian officials said air defenses intercepted hundreds of drones as airports briefly shut and at least 600,000 people lost power in Ukraine.
On October 14, Ukraine launched nearly 500 attack drones toward Moscow, forcing the city's four major airports to temporarily suspend operations, according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.
Moscow's four major airports were closed for 101 hours during the first 14 days of October, exceeding the 46 hours recorded for all of September, according to investigative outlet Agentstvo.
More than 160 flights were delayed or canceled during the October 15–16 disruptions, according to Rosaviatsiya, with Vnukovo Airport remaining closed for more than eight hours.
Russian forces retaliated with 39 ballistic missiles and more than 120 drones on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, leaving at least 600,000 people without electricity, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported.
In September, Zelenskyy warned Russian skies were 'becoming unsafe' and urged international airlines to stop flying to Russian airports, foreshadowing this clandestine airspace campaign targeting civil aviation infrastructure.
Several civilians were killed in Ukraine in Russian attacks overnight Thursday. At the same time, the mayor of Moscow stated that the region had been attacked with over 600 drones. In total, Ukraine is said to have sent over 800 drones.
RUSSIA was subjected to a major drone attack overnight, and one of the possible targets was a military facility near Moscow where Russian air defense systems are being repaired.
In the wake of the escalation of military tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Moscow announced the downing of 808 Ukrainian drones and Kiev announced the destruction of 181 Russian drones, killing and wounding several people in these attacks.
