Norovirus sickened 89 people, including 81 passengers and 8 crew, during a 12-day cruise; the ship underwent increased cleaning and isolation protocols, CDC said.
- Recently, Holland America Line's Rotterdam experienced a norovirus outbreak sickening 81 passengers and 8 crew during its Dec. 28–Friday voyage, returning to Port Everglades.
- Norovirus, which spreads easily through contaminated food, surfaces, or close contact, causes symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting 12 to 48 hours after exposure, affecting Rotterdam in its second outbreak within 11 months.
- Ship medical staff collected stool specimens and isolated ill passengers and crew, while the CDC said vomiting and diarrhea were the predominant symptoms.
- Holland America Line carried out a `comprehensive sanitization` and increased disinfection after the cruise, and the CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program is reviewing the ship's outbreak response following notification on Jan. 8.
- With 2,593 passengers onboard, the CDC listed this as the 21st cruise ship norovirus outbreak this year, noting illnesses represented 3.3% of passengers.
