TSA Says More than 300 Drones Have Been Seized Near World Cup Sites
The FBI says 53 of the seizures were in North Texas, where prosecutors say one operator flew an unregistered drone into restricted airspace.
Federal authorities have seized over 300 unauthorized drones near FIFA World Cup venues since the tournament began on June 11, deploying comprehensive airspace security led by the Transportation Security Administration and FBI.
The Federal Aviation Administration established strict 'No Drone Zone' temporary flight restrictions around stadiums and fan festivals to ensure public safety, prohibiting operations within a one-nautical-mile radius and up to 1,000 feet above ground level.
In one of the first felony cases, FBI Dallas arrested Luis Mauricio Flores Ordonez for flying an unregistered drone over restricted airspace; violators face criminal fines up to $100,000 and civil penalties reaching $75,000 per violation.
Authorities treat every unauthorized drone as a potential threat regardless of intent, said FBI spokesperson Kristen Setera, noting devices launched miles away can reach crowded venues within seconds.
Flight restrictions remain in place through July 21, two days after the tournament concludes, as law enforcement continues monitoring venues and urges the public to report unsafe drone activity by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI.
