Nursing Care Worker Numbers Fall to 2.13 Million; Demand is Growing Higher, but Pay Remains Low

The number of nursing care workers nationwide fell to 2.126 million in fiscal 2023, down by 28,000 from the previous year to mark the first decline since the long-term care insurance system started in fiscal 2000, according to a Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry survey.

At the end of 2024, according to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), a total of 147 100 persons were in training as nurses or nurses. Thus, the number of apprentices in nursing care has hardly changed compared with the end of 2023 (146 900 nurses).
