The last blast furnace in the United Kingdom is about to close, following a disagreement on its financing between its owner, the Chinese Jingye, and the government. This will put an end to one hundred and seventy-five years of steel production.

Council 'commits to work with British Steel to protect jobs'

A joint motion, backed by the ruling Conservative and opposition Labour group, has reiterated the council's commitment to do all it can to keep the steelworks in Scunthorpe, and adds to calls for nationalisation as a last resort.
