More and more pupils in Austria are significantly older than their classmates. Between 2015 and 2023, the proportion of so-called "older" children in elementary schools rose from 4.1 to 5.8 percent, in middle schools and AHS lower levels from 6.5 to 9.1 percent. The main reason for this is that they remain seated.
In Austria, more and more pupils are significantly older than most of their classmates, the current edition of the OECD study "Education at a Glance". Between 2015 and 2023, the proportion of "older" children and young people aged at least two years older than planned in this class level rose from 4.1 to 5.8% in the elementary schools. In the middle schools and AHS lower levels, there was an increase from 6.5 to 9.1 percent.
