Moore, Polis to attend governors meeting after White House reverses course
The White House invited all governors after initial exclusions prompted criticism and boycotts, with Democratic leaders Wes Moore and Jared Polis attending the NGA meeting.
- On Friday, Feb. 20, President Donald J. Trump reversed earlier exclusions and invited all governors to the NGA breakfast, as Stitt wrote, `I am writing to inform you that President Donald J. Trump is inviting all governors of the 55 States and territories to the Friday, Feb. 20 NGA Business Breakfast.`
- On Feb. 11, Stitt told governors all were invited after a 'misunderstanding in scheduling,' reversing earlier plans to limit invitations, as NGA withdrew facilitation amid the dispute.
- Late Thursday, Mills announced she would not attend, then changed her mind Friday, saying `Right before the meeting this morning, I had a gut feeling that I should attend ́ the same feeling inside my heart when I stood up to the president one year ago ́ that if there is a chance to stand up for Maine people and to address important issues, regardless of how terrible this president is, I should not hesitate to be there,` Mills said.
- Contradictory White House messaging produced last-minute reversals and confusion about invitations, disrupting one of Washington's few remaining bipartisan gatherings, the Associated Press said.
- Beyond the meeting, the dispute highlights frictions in state-federal relations as President of the United States Trump threatened to withhold federal funds from Maine, boosting Mills's Senate campaign profile.
