Mookie Betts returns to the Dodgers' lineup after an oblique injury
Betts returned after a five-week absence, and the Dodgers hope his bat can help a team that scored three runs or fewer in 8 of 11 games.
Mookie Betts returned to the Los Angeles Dodgers' lineup Monday night, five weeks after being sidelined with an oblique injury, batting between Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman.
Before his April 5 injury, the 33-year-old shortstop struggled, batting.179 in eight games. "Some of the movements I couldn't do" lingered for a long time, Betts said of his recovery.
With Betts' return, the Dodgers optioned infielder Alex Freeland to Triple-A Oklahoma City after he hit.235 with two homers in 33 games. "Hyeseong has performed better," manager Dave Roberts said regarding the decision to retain Hyeseong Kim.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts plans to ease Betts into action, starting him Monday and Tuesday before a scheduled rest on Wednesday. "I think with Mookie, you just don't know," Roberts said of expectations.
The Dodgers sit at 24-16, tied for first place in the National League West, having dropped seven of their last 11 games. Betts' return aims to jumpstart an offense that scored three runs or fewer in eight of those contests.
