Andalusian CSIC researchers manage to inactivate the virus in up to 97% of the cells treated in the laboratory
They manage to remove up to 97% of the HIV DNA integrated with CRISPR-SaCas9 in in vitro cells and leave it inactive, although ex vivo and mouse safety need to be validated.
(EFE).- A research team managed to remove some of the DNA from the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) that was integrated into laboratory infected cells, using ‘molecular scissors’, a breakthrough that demonstrates that it is possible to damage the genome of this virus so widely that the virus cannot be repaired or propagated.
The next steps will be to validate the strategy in ex vivo treated patient cells, i.e. with samples taken from an organism but analyzed or treated outside the body, test it in humanized rat models and continue to evaluate its safety.
