Mitchell Area Youth Shooters highlight bright future for high school trap shooting
The program has grown with volunteer coaches and community support, while nearly 40% of participating students do not join other extracurriculars.
Jerry Opbroek recently completed the ninth spring season leading the Mitchell Area Youth Shooters, a team affiliated with the South Dakota High School Clay Target League.
Opbroek has held his leadership roles at the Mitchell Gun Club for 36 years, beginning as a longtime volunteer while teaching high school students in Mitchell.
According to the USA Clay Target League, around 150,000 students have been introduced to shooting sports through affiliated chapters, with just below 40 percent not participating in other extra-curricular activities.
Opbroek manages the program with a reliable stable of volunteer coaches and community support; "I consider these kids my kids, even though they're not," Opbroek said, noting he does not intend to quit soon.
Opbroek's storied career, including his wrestling coaching history, is featured in the new "Midwest Made" mini-documentary, available for free online or via the Midwest Sports+ app.
