Nation's Attorneys General Want Tougher Regulations Targeting Robocallers
The coalition says stronger certification and reporting rules would help law enforcement trace illegal robocalls and stop scammers from using real numbers.
On Thursday, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul joined a bipartisan coalition of 49 attorneys general urging the Federal Communications Commission to strengthen rules preventing scammers from purchasing and cycling through legitimate phone numbers.
After authorities successfully curtailed illegal spoofing, scammers shifted tactics and now purchase legitimate phone numbers in bulk to evade spam filters and impersonate trusted businesses or government agencies.
Last year, Americans received about 29.6 billion scam robocalls and text messages, losing nearly $2 billion as scammers rotated through millions of newly acquired numbers to avoid detection.
The coalition demands stronger certification requirements for companies reselling phone numbers, regular law enforcement reporting, and a ban on number cycling to prevent scammers from exploiting legitimate phone numbers.
Officials from the Anti-Robocall Multistate Litigation Task Force argue the FCC's currently proposed rules fall short, pushing for more rigorous oversight to hold resellers accountable for numbers used in illegal campaigns.
