Missing Aussie Trekker Found Dead in Peru
The 30-year-old Melbourne hiker vanished on a solo trek in the Huayhuash region, and family said he was found dead after an almost three-week search.
On Friday, Jordan Yap, a 30-year-old Melbourne man, was found dead in Peru near the remote village of Machaycancha after an almost three-week search.
Yap embarked on a 10-day solo trek along the Cordillera Huayhuash circuit on September 14, but failed to check into his hotel on September 23 as planned.
After struggling to coordinate with Peruvian authorities, the family hired local mountain rescue organization Socorro Andino Peruano to assist the search efforts.
His family confirmed the news on social media Saturday, stating, "With a heavy heart we are so sorry to tell you Jordan has been found, and he did not survive."
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is assisting the family, who remembered Yap as a vibrant man who brought "immense joy" to many people's lives.
