Missing Marwell Capybara Samba Caught on Camera Six Months After Escape
Wildlife cameras captured grainy images after six months on the run, and keepers are using a feeding area to help her return safely.
New wildlife camera images captured Samba, the one-year-old capybara missing from Marwell Zoo, on private land this month. Keepers are working to safely recover the animal, the zoo stated on Tuesday.
Samba escaped from a temporary enclosure at Marwell Zoo six months ago, shortly after arriving from Jimmy Farm and Wildlife Park with her sister, Tango. While Tango was quickly recovered, Samba ventured beyond the zoo's grounds into Hampshire.
The zoo installed additional wildlife cameras in recent weeks and established a feeding area to encourage Samba to return regularly. "We have also been establishing a feeding area," the zoo explained, noting the strategy encourages her to become familiar with the location.
Officials are keeping Samba's exact location confidential to prevent stress, emphasizing that recovery is a "gradual and carefully managed process." Keepers remain "focused on bringing her home safely," according to the zoo's statement.
Solitary capybaras can be prone to stress and depression, while winter months pose risks including traffic and limited food sources for Samba. The zoo's ongoing recovery efforts prioritize her safety as conditions tighten.
