Missing B.C. skyrunner ‘remains among the mountains,’ family says after search
Her family says search crews found no trace after two weeks, and evidence suggests she fell while descending the mountain.
- On September 1, Canadian mountaineer Kalie McCrystal went missing while attempting to set a speed record on the Matterhorn. Her family has acknowledged she likely fell while descending the 4,478-metre peak on the Italian-Swiss border.
- Search crews, including Italy's Guardia di Finanza, conducted extensive two-week efforts using helicopters, drones, and on-foot patrols across treacherous terrain. McCrystal's family remained in the Italian village of Cervinia at the mountain's base throughout the unsuccessful search.
- Two Polish climbers filmed McCrystal ascending quickly near Pic Tyndall, a sub-summit about 200 metres below the peak, on September 1. The Guardia di Finanza tracked the final signal from her electronic SIM card to that same area.
- British Columbia provincial legislator Amelia Boultbee shared a statement from McCrystal's family, expressing peace knowing she was doing what made her feel alive. They said she "remains among the mountains where she felt most at home."
- McCrystal's disappearance marks the second presumed fatality on the Matterhorn this year. Records indicate between 500 and 600 climbers have lost their lives on the mountain since the first recorded ascent in 1864.
