72nd Princess Kay of the Milky Way Crowned at MN State Fairgrounds
Malorie Thorson, a 20-year-old dairy production student, will represent Minnesota's nearly 1,800 dairy farm families and have her likeness carved in butter at the state fair.
- On Aug. 20, 2025, Malorie Thorson, a 20-year-old college student from Waverly, was crowned the 72nd Princess Kay at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds; her first duty is a butter sculpture in the Dairy Building.
- The Princess Kay role serves as the official goodwill ambassador for nearly 1,800 Minnesota dairy farm families, with candidates selected on communication skills, personality, dairy knowledge and commitment to promotion.
- At the coronation ceremony Wednesday night, 10 county dairy princesses competed for the title at the fairgrounds, with Alexis Hoefs and April Klaphake named runners-up; an estimated 1,000 attended and more than 1,200 watched online near the Bandshell.
- Thorson will spend her year making public appearances, classroom visits, and speeches to connect consumers with Minnesota's dairy farm families, while Princess Kay's Facebook and Instagram pages will post updates as she appears near the Butter Sculpture Booth in the Dairy Building.
- Backed by Midwest Dairy, the program sponsor funded by dairy farmers through their promotion checkoff, representing 4,400 dairy farm families across a 10-state region including Minnesota and beyond.
