Minnesota gubernatorial candidate suspends campaign after daughter dies from stabbing
Jeff Johnson halted his 2026 Minnesota gubernatorial campaign after his daughter was fatally stabbed; police believe her husband was responsible and are continuing the investigation.
- Early Monday, Feb. 9, Jeff Johnson, Republican candidate for Minnesota governor and former St. Cloud City Council member, suspended his campaign, the Republican Party of Minnesota said.
- Officers responded about 8:20 p.m. Saturday to the 3100 block of 40th Avenue South and found Hallie Marie Tobler, 22-year-old St. Cloud woman, dead inside a locked apartment.
- The Midwest Medical Examiner's Office said the victim died from multiple stab wounds, and Dylan Michael Tobler, 23-year-old husband, was found with self-inflicted injuries in police custody at St. Cloud Hospital.
- Investigators said the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting the active probe, and Dylan Tobler will be booked into Stearns County Jail after hospital treatment.
- Amid the loss, other candidates and the party offered sympathy and prayers; Peggy Bennett, Republican candidate for governor, and the Republican Party of Minnesota highlighted a 24-hour statewide hotline and that more than 12 million people face domestic violence yearly.
